Who looks for an n8n alternative
n8n is a strong tool. It has hundreds of nodes, a visual canvas, code nodes, AI agent nodes and an open license that lets you run it on your own hardware. Developers like it for good reasons. The people who start searching for something else are usually not unhappy with the features. They are unhappy with what it takes to keep a handful of scheduled jobs alive.
We hear the same three stories. An operations lead inherited a self hosted n8n instance from a contractor who left, and nobody knows how to upgrade it. A marketing team built five workflows on n8n Cloud and spends more time fixing broken nodes after API changes than reading the output. A founder wants a daily research agent but does not want to learn what a Merge node or an expression editor is.
Signs n8n is more tool than you need
- Most of your workflows start with a Schedule Trigger and end with a Slack message, an email or a sheet.
- Nobody on the team wants to own the server, the database backups or version upgrades.
- Failed runs are found days later, when someone notices a report did not arrive.
- Every new job needs the one person who understands the canvas.
- You want the job to report only what changed since last time, and building that state logic by hand keeps slipping.
Crons vs n8n side by side
| Area | Crons | n8n |
|---|---|---|
| How you build | One sentence in plain English, then edit the proposed steps | Drag nodes on a canvas and connect them, with expressions and code nodes |
| Hosting | Fully hosted, nothing to install or patch | n8n Cloud, or self hosted Community edition on your own server |
| Schedules | Plain English with timezone, every hour on Starter, 15 minutes on Pro, 5 minutes on Teams | Schedule Trigger node with intervals or cron expressions |
| Memory between runs | Built in steps to compare with last run and skip duplicates | Possible with a database, static data or a custom setup you build |
| Human approval | Approval gate step on every plan, with Slack or email notice | Possible with wait and form nodes you configure |
| Failure handling | 3 retries with backoff and an alert by email or Slack | Retry settings per node and an error workflow you design |
| Integrations | Slack, Gmail, HubSpot, Google Sheets, Notion, webhooks, HTTP requests, browser actions | Hundreds of built in nodes plus community nodes |
| Pricing model | Flat plans at $99, $299 or $999 per month, or $49, $149 or $499 billed yearly, AI calls included | Cloud plans priced per execution (2,500 on Starter, 10,000 on Pro), listed in euros; self hosting is free to license but you pay for the server and the time |
| Best for | Business teams running recurring research, reporting and monitoring agents | Technical teams building many event driven integrations |
n8n details come from n8n's pricing page and documentation, where Cloud plans are listed in euros, an execution is one full run of a workflow, and Business features need a license key. n8n changes plans from time to time, so check the current page before you decide.
The honest summary: n8n wins on breadth of integrations and on execution volume per dollar. If you run thousands of small event driven workflows and have a developer who enjoys the canvas, stay on n8n. Crons wins when the work is a smaller number of scheduled AI jobs that a non technical team has to build, trust and audit.
What self hosting n8n really costs
The Community edition has no license fee, which is why "self hosted" shows up in so many searches. The software is free. Running it is not. A production instance needs a server or a container platform, a Postgres database, backups, TLS certificates, a queue for heavier loads, monitoring and someone who upgrades it without breaking existing workflows.
For a team that already runs infrastructure, that is a small add on. For a five person sales or marketing team, it is the reason the project stalls. A few hours a month of engineering time on upkeep usually costs more than a flat hosted plan, and the risk sits with one person. If that person leaves, the reports stop and nobody notices until a manager asks where they went.
Crons runs the scheduler, the workers and the run history for you. A cron that fails retries three times, then sends an alert with a link to the exact step and the error. You read results; you do not babysit a server.
Moving an n8n workflow to Crons
You do not import a JSON export. Look at what the workflow does from trigger to final node, and write it as one sentence. A typical example: "Every Monday at 8 AM in New York time, check the pricing pages of our 12 competitors, compare with last week, and post only real changes to #product in Slack."
- 1Paste the sentence into the demo on the homepage. Crons turns the timing into a cron expression and shows the next three run times.
- 2Review the proposed steps: web fetch or browser actions, an AI step that reads the pages, a memory check against last week, and a Slack post.
- 3Connect the apps the cron uses from the integrations list.
- 4Run it once in dry run mode and read the full log without posting anything.
- 5Add an approval gate in front of any step that emails customers or writes to your CRM, then switch it on and turn the n8n workflow off.
Most research and reporting workflows move over in under an hour, including testing. Workflows that are really integrations, like syncing every new Stripe customer to three systems in real time, are better left in n8n or triggered from it.
Jobs that fit Crons better than n8n
- Competitor monitoring. Pricing pages, changelogs and job boards checked on a schedule, with only real changes reported. The competitor monitor template is ready to use.
- Lead research. New funding announcements or hiring signals matched to your ideal customer profile every weekday, written to HubSpot without duplicates.
- Weekly team reports. Pipeline, ticket or campaign data summarized every Monday and posted to Slack. See the AI agent Slack bot guide.
- Month end finance checks. Invoices from Gmail matched against a ledger sheet, with mismatches held for approval.
- Client reporting for agencies. One cron per client with its own schedule, sources and channel.
The common thread is a schedule, a judgment call by AI and a result a person acts on. That is what Crons is built around, and it is why each job is a single AI cron job rather than a graph of nodes.
When n8n is the better choice
Pick n8n if you need an integration Crons does not have, if you must keep all data on your own servers for compliance, if you run thousands of executions a day, or if your team is technical and likes building on a canvas. n8n is also the right call when the job is triggered by events in many niche apps rather than by a clock.
Crons has no free plan. Starter is $99 per month, or $49 per month billed yearly, for 10 active crons and 300 runs a month. Pro is $299, or $149 billed yearly, for 50 crons, 1,500 runs, 5 seats, inbound webhooks, the REST API, an MCP server and sandboxed code steps. Teams adds unlimited crons, SSO, an audit log and a 99.9 percent uptime SLA. Full limits are on the pricing page.
Using n8n and Crons together
You do not have to choose one. Keep n8n for real time integrations, and move scheduled AI agents to Crons. On Pro and Teams, an n8n HTTP Request node can start a cron through an inbound webhook or the REST API, and a cron can call an n8n webhook at the end of its run to hand results back. Teams that also tried Zapier for this can read our Zapier AI Agents alternative comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best n8n alternative for non technical teams?
For scheduled AI work, a tool that builds the workflow from a plain sentence is easiest. Crons turns "every Monday, check these pages and post changes to Slack" into a schedule with steps, memory and approvals. For simple event driven automations, Zapier and Make are also common picks.
Is there an n8n alternative without self hosting?
Yes. n8n Cloud itself removes the server, and fully hosted tools such as Crons, Zapier and Make need no installation at all. Crons runs the scheduler, retries, run logs and alerts for you, so nobody on the team has to patch or back up a server.
How much does n8n cost?
n8n lists Cloud prices in euros on its pricing page: Starter at 20 euros and Pro at 50 euros per month billed yearly, with 2,500 and 10,000 executions. Business is self hosted with a license. The Community edition is free to license but you pay for hosting and upkeep.
Can I move my n8n workflows to Crons?
You rebuild them rather than import them. Describe what the workflow does in one sentence, review the proposed steps and run a dry run. Scheduled research, reporting and monitoring workflows usually take minutes to rebuild.
Does Crons have AI agent nodes like n8n?
Crons does not use nodes. Every cron is an AI agent with steps for web fetch, browser actions, AI reasoning, memory, approvals and delivery. Pro and Teams add sandboxed JavaScript or Python code steps when you need custom logic.
Can Crons and n8n work together?
Yes. On Pro and Teams, n8n can start a cron through an inbound webhook or the REST API, and a cron can send its results to an n8n webhook. Many teams keep integrations in n8n and move scheduled AI jobs to Crons.
